RECENT PROJECTS

Derivative's team of designers, developers, animators and artists recently completed realtime generative video projections for the PRADA Epicenter store in Tokyo by adapting Touch to seamlessly meld with architect Jacques Herzog's vision.

The projections simulate a corporeal quality, taking on subtle forms characterized by fluid movement of organic texture and forms, providing a constantly changing architectural element. The completely synthesized imagery behaves according to sunrise/sunset times and moon phase, derived from the building’s longitude and latitude. These digitally-generated images are shaped and projected on five different surfaces of the store.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES WITH TOUCH

Touch animation systems are called synths and are created in TouchDesigner, along with their own customizable interfaces. Touch is a real-time 3D animation tool, as each synth's properties can be manipulated either on the spot or in advance, making it a perfect tool for generating visuals in realtime for any environment.

Visuals created in Touch can be both randomly-generated and highly-controlled. Textural elements can be easily manipulated on a whim or precisely planned. Still, the power of Touch rests in its real-time capabilities, giving anyone the power to manipulate their environment.

MAIN FEATURES

Realtime Image Generation - Touch can output images and video at any resolution to any video projector.

Evolving Interactive Light Projections - Light projections can be designed to change forever or interact with the environment and people. Touch includes a wide variety of waveform generators and non-repeating random noise functions and can also interface with environmental sensors, i.e. temperature, wind direction, infrared, video differencing and luminance.

Highly Portable - Touch Synth files are generally small. Audio files, texture maps, and video make Touch synth files larger, but have to be transferred irregularly. Therefore, locally generative realtime Touch files make collaboration over the Internet easy and cost effective.

On Site Calibration – Touch Synths are easy to modify, and all development is tested in real-time as it is made. Architectural Synths can be build with complete calibration functionality for easy installation and flexible integration. Tools include capabilities for image distortion correction in cases where projecting on irregular surfaces and realtime projection masking for creating non-rectangular projections.

Complete Support for 3D Surfaces - Touch includes a procedural modeler for synthesized 3D surfaces. It supports NURBS, Bezier Surfaces, Trim Curves, Curve Projections, Polygon Meshes.

Support for Complex 3D Systems - Touch's powerful procedural modeler goes deeper than a standard set of traditional modeling tools. Touch supports a wide variety of more sophisticated physical modeling tools for mimicking real world behavior. Systems include Iso-Parametric Surfaces, L-Systems (Lindenmayer-systems), Particle Systems, Metaballs and Metaball Force Fields, Inverse and Forward Kinematics.

Network Communication - Two or more computers running Touch can easily network, which makes syncing multiple computers easy. For large tasks, functionality may be broken up over multiple computers. For example, one computer can run "Touch Screen" and/or data processing tasks while sending the lighter processed data via the network for computing geometry and generating the image.

Import/Filter System Control Data - Touch can take control data from MIDI, serial, joystick, custom sensors, TCP/IP network, or custom optical devices. Touch's full MIDI implementation makes it easy to work with music programs for integrated audio visual performances or installations.

Very Powerful Signal Processor – CHOPs or Channel Operations analyse and process channel data. Touch has a wide variety of realtime data converters which allows for processing most data formats, including audio, video/image, MIDI, Serial, Feedback operations are supported, along with most math functions, many physical simulators, logic operations and more.

Touch Screen Control / Human Interface Design – "Touch Screen" interfaces can be completely designed, prototyped and distributed using Touch. TouchDesigner's powerful interface building toolkit allows for rapid development and deployment of "Touch Screen" interfaces that can control a network of other Touch computers or another software / lighting / robotic / mechanical system(s).
